The Bear

It’s ’92 at the Old Forge Arcade.
Just kickin’ back and hackysack’s bein’ played.
Girls sittin’ out on the marquee at the Strand.
And maybe later we’ll go to Lock and Dam
And watch the water.
Here comes a bear down the street that we’re on.
He ambles up and has a seat on the lawn
And looks around at
Enchanted Forest where the fun never stops
And spots the tchotchkes at the souvenir shops
But here’s the ranger.
He gets out real slow but the bear knows the drill.
He lumbers past us and proceeds down the hill.
So we keep playin.

Heath Markham Road

All we wanted was to go and drive around
In Jeff’s LeBaron, and it’s cool with the top down.
With no outlet, without caution,
I’m in the back with Bren ‘cuz Mike got shotgun.
We’re passing Rush, going south and out of town.
Left on Stony Brook and past that little park.
We cross the creek and feel the foggy dark.
We pass through Five Points in the moonlight damp,
Then past the gates to the Sunshine camp.
Demo tape is on. I listen to my parts.
The fog gets thicker and the air gets strangely cold.
We see a darkened cobblestone. It’s really old.
We stop in front and wonder what’s in there.
Maybe those curtains moved. Maybe I’m scared.
The sign ahead says we’re on Heath Markham Road.
We’ve got to go, we’ve gotta get home,
But every single road just goes to Heath Markham.
You know for sure you’re on the wrong road
When you see that old cobblestone on Heath Markham.

Fish Creek

I was fifteen. I went to Fish Creek.
It was the Cooks’ Camp. I’d never been there.
There were black flies. We were so alive.
All of the chairs were Adirondack style
It was so strange to be in close range
with all the Cook girls, and Tara came too.
I was so sure that I’d get closer.
I was running barefoot through grass, so cool.
Picking our way from rock to rock,
trying to keep from getting wet feet.
Making our way from rock to rock along Fish Creek.
I was so close. I washed the windows.
I was trying real hard. My hair was long too.
Wanted a girlfriend. I wore a green vest
with pins and suchlike. I think I wore boots.
Picking our way from rock to rock,
trying to keep from getting wet feet.
Making our way from rock to rock along Fish Creek.
We made a fire down on the rocks,
waterlogged river rocks.
One of the rocks got so hot that it popped,
and a piece of rock burned Kristin’s foot.
We waded deeper into the water.
We wanted to see what was farther on down.
Then “something bit me.”
They were plain to see. I wanted to see
what was farther on down.
Picking our way from rock to rock,
trying to keep from getting wet feet.
Making our way from rock to rock along Fish Creek.
